Arnos Vale, St. Vincent – The Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB) announced a 13-man squad to represent the Windward Islands Volcanoes Franchise in their first encounter against Jamaica in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional First-Class Championship that is scheduled to begin in Jamaica and St. Kitts on February 7th 2024.

West Indian test players, Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge are on currently on tour with the West Indies team in Australia for the Test and One Day International series; as such, they will only be available from the second round of matches. Former West Indies Under-19 captain, Kimani Melius was given his maiden opportunity to lead the squad in their absence.

After the CWI One-Day tournament that ended in November 2023, the Franchise began training in St. Vincent and the Grenadines – the home of the Franchise. In January 2024, several players from throughout the Windward Islands were invited to St. Vincent to train with the Franchise players under the watchful eyes of head coach, former Windward Island and West Indies fast bowler, Kenroy Peters. When asked about the team’s preparation, he remarked, “Preparation for the upcoming championship went well despite the challenges of bad weather. We were able to get about 80% of our work done. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we focused on individual coaching sessions to fine-tune the skills of the players. We also spent a lot of time doing open-net and scenario-based training at the Park Hill Playing field, so I am satisfied with how things have gone thus far. The boys know Alick and Kavem won’t be available for the first match, so they are really working hard to be impactful on their own which obviously augurs well for us as a team. I strongly believe we will represent well.”

In the 2023 CWI Regional First-Class Championship, the Windward Islands Franchise for the first time in its history played unbeaten, however, the Guyana Harpy Eagles – the only other team to have played unbeaten, were crowned champions after amassing the most points.

The team will depart St. Vincent on Saturday, February 3rd for Jamaica for their first encounter against the host. Matches are expected to be streamed live on Cricket West Indies YouTube channel.
